The vehicle label is your starting point.
NHTSA identifies the vehicle’s tire-information label and owner’s manual as sources for the recommended inflation pressure. The number molded into a tire’s sidewall is not the vehicle’s recommended pressure. Check the specification for your actual vehicle and tire arrangement.
NHTSA recommends checking pressure at least monthly with the tires cold, meaning the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours. The agency also notes that a pressure-monitoring warning does not replace regular checks.
Pay attention to a repeating problem.
Outside temperature can affect tire pressure. That does not establish the cause of every warning or explain away repeated loss from one tire. Keep a simple note of which tire is involved, when you noticed the warning and whether the concern has returned after being addressed.
If you see damage or have reason to doubt that the vehicle is safe to drive, contact a qualified tire professional before making a trip. This guide cannot assess a tire from a dashboard message.
What helps when you call.
- Your vehicle’s year, make and model.
- The exact warning and when it appeared.
- Whether the issue seems to involve one tire or several.
- Any recent tire work or impact you know about.
Use observations rather than a diagnosis. “The warning came back the next morning” is more useful than guessing that a sensor or tire must be replaced. If you already have a pressure reading, mention when and how it was taken.
If the conversation turns to replacement.
Ask about correct fit, available options and what is included in the estimate. Confirm selection and installation timing before arranging a visit. A tire’s appearance or a familiar brand name alone does not settle whether it is appropriate for your vehicle.
Holley’s tire page gives you a starting checklist for that call. The shop is in West Haven; contact it directly to discuss the condition of your tires and current availability.
