Start with when it happens.

Think about the ordinary situation in which you first noticed the sound. Was the vehicle starting, sitting still, turning, slowing down or traveling over a bump? Does it happen briefly or continue? Is it something you have heard once, or does it happen during the same part of your usual drive?

Write down what you remember without trying to recreate it. If the concern affects your ability to steer or stop, or otherwise feels unsafe, do not keep driving to collect a better description. Ask about a safe way to arrange an inspection.

Your own words are useful.

A rattle, a squeak, a hum or a click may be the best description you have. Add where you think you heard it, but make clear when that is uncertain. Sounds can be difficult to locate from inside a vehicle; an observation is not a confirmed source.

Instead of “I need a new wheel bearing,” try “I hear a humming sound that I did not notice before.” The first statement selects a repair. The second leaves room for the shop to inspect the concern and discuss what it finds.

Mention what changed recently.

Include recent work, a tire change, an impact or the date the sound began. Keep invoices if you have them. Also mention warning lights or a change in how the vehicle drives. These notes should help explain the concern, not turn into a long list of possible parts you found online.

  • Vehicle year, make, model and mileage.
  • When the sound began and when you usually hear it.
  • Recent repairs or events that may be relevant.
  • Any other symptoms that appeared at the same time.

Agree on the next step before the visit.

Call to discuss inspection availability, arrival arrangements and when you can expect an update. If you have a recording made safely while parked, ask whether it would be useful. Do not use a phone while driving to record a sound.

This is a communication checklist, not a diagnosis. Different faults can sound similar. Holley’s general repair page explains what to have ready when you contact the West Haven shop.
